CHARACTER'S NAME: Koromaru
CHARACTER'S LIVEJOURNAL: koro_maru
AGE: (Honestly, I don’t know. I never saw anything in the game that alluded to his age, though if pressed, my inclination is to make him a bit on the middle-aged side, not quite old simply due to his rather energetic nature, but not a puppy either. I will, of course, defer to the moderators with regard to this issue.)

HOMETOWN: Iwatodai
OCCUPATION: Canis lupus familiaris and collector of small, easily obtainable items that often allow for the establishment of new social links.

PLAYED BY: Koromaru, with thanks to manly_faces for clarification on this.
WEAKNESSES: Perhaps due to or despite the loss he has suffered in his life, that of his owner, Koromaru is very much a creature of habit. He is fiercely protective of his “pack,” the group that he sees himself a part of almost to a fault; he has no issue with fighting to the death in order to try to save pack members and while such a trait might be seen as admirable in a dog, it is still a potential weakness that can be exploited.

Koromaru is a dog, and as such, lacks the raw complexity of thought possessed by human beings. Though cunning as the hunting animals that he and his kind have descended from and surprisingly smart, perhaps due in part to his persona, Koromaru will never be one to perform day to day actions that would normally step outside the traditional patterns of a dog. He will never be seen spot-welding, solving mathematical equations or calling in a pepperoni pizza to split with Junpei (though if Junpei feels inclined to pass some of the pepperoni along, he won’t be faulted… at least not by Koromaru.)

Being a dog also means certain social stigmas as well. Characters may have a multitude of reasons for ignoring Koromaru, particularly since he seems able to care for himself to a degree and because he is both incapable of human speech and unable to help them with their homework. That’s not to say anything of individuals who may have a fear or aversion to dogs, whether it is for a mundane reason like allergies or a genuine psychological issue: they were bit by one as a child; they were raised in a family that had a dog and were abusive to it etc… The end result is that Koromaru misses out on many of the “touchy” moments, though some might learn to take comfort simply in his presence.

STRENGTHS: Despite having a rather long list of weaknesses, many of which are simply due to the fact that he is not human, Koromaru boasts some rather impressive strengths as well. From a biological standpoint, his auditory and olfactory senses are far superior to human beings and while he will never be able to rival a human with a persona that specializes in detection (i.e. Fuuka), his acuteness makes him a valuable companion and guard against both shadows and human beings.

On the subject of guarding, Koromaru approaches interaction with people the way that most dogs would. As mentioned above in the “Weaknesses” section, he sees people that he can trust and rely on to protect him as his “pack,” and will go to great, almost ridiculous lengths to protect them in turn. Those that count Koromaru as a friend have a fierce ally indeed!

Finally, even though he lacks speech, Koromaru can still serve as a comfort and good friend to those who take the time to interact with him. In a world of human concerns where sometimes, particularly for young adults, the answers seem hopelessly out of reach, having a friend who can just sit with you, rest his head on your knee and lick your hand can be just what you need. Along those lines, Koromaru also seems to possess an empathic sense when it comes to the condition and emotional state of his pack. Individuals that seem weakened, whether from injury or illness receive extra protection and attention from Koromaru. Likewise, individuals who seem saddened or depressed will engender a sort of concern from Koromaru, while others who seem energetic or assertive will foster responses of playfullness or obedience from their canine friend.

WEAPON OF CHOICE: Mouth-blade: A small, scimitar-shaped knife with a handle specially designed for Koromaru to bite down on and grip with his mouth. Its diminutive size prohibits powerful blows, but the sheer sharpness of the weapon helps to compensate for this and Koromaru naturally favors the quick cuts and slashes it is capable of producing.
PERSONA: Ceberus
PERSONA ABILITIES: Agi, Mudo
ARCANA: Strength
FACTION: (Unless the player who has claimed Akihiko would like to rp discovering me as he did in Persona 3 first) S.E.E.S.
PERSONALITY: As mentioned above, Koromaru is a creature of great loyalty and compassion as well as a tenacious defender of those who have earned his trust. Such individuals are clumped into a group he recognizes as his pack, and various individuals within the pack have their places in relativity to him. Unlike most dogs, however, Koromaru does not attempt to assert dominance over individuals that do not establish themselves as higher up on the chain then he. Coming from a benevolent and kind owner in the monk that raised him, Koromaru takes a leaf from his late master and allows people to open up to him at their own pace, displaying a degree of respect that can be hard to understand at some times, but once given is rarely diminished. Indeed, the only people who have any real reason to fear Koromaru, aside from those who threaten the pack, are people that are regularly negative and abusive to him. Shadows are given no quarter and afforded no mercy, something that should hardly be surprising since they never seem to offer either the former or the latter.

When not battling shadows, Koromaru is best described as friendly and easy-going. Though no longer a puppy, he happily plays with anyone who makes the time for him, glad to relax after a serious fight by engaging in less stressful pastimes such as walks (or runs), a variety of games, watching the television, trying to coax an extra treat out of an overly-generous person and taking long naps in the sun. Of course if no one has the time for him, Koromaru has no real problem with finding ways to amuse himself and he still goes to visit the site where his former master was killed once a day unless otherwise occupied. If given a truly inordinate amount of free time without anyone to spend it with, he will spend the day at the shrine, walking the old route he and his owner used to go on and keeping watch over his former home until it is time to return to the dorms.

As evening time rolls around, Koromaru becomes quite alert. Unfettered by schoolwork or social drama, he has ample time to save his energy for the coming Dark Hour, and even on nights when incursions to Tartarus are not occurring, he still keeps vigil over the dorm, preferably from a location where he can keep track of multiple entrances unless someone in the dorm is unwell, in which case he prefers to be on the same floor as them, resting by the stairway so that he is able to rush down or up the stairs, though if someone is considerably weakened or ill, he will sit himself right outside their door, a somber look in his eyes until he senses they are getting better.

And yet, despite all of his energy and enthusiasm, there are times when Koromaru seems sad or distant. He will occasionally stare off or sit and watch time pass, particularly when he is visiting the place of his late owner’s demise. One could speculate that, just as accepting the role of a persona user opens the mind to a certain level of understanding that can be difficult to handle at times, his own persona has given Koromaru the ability to comprehend death in a manner more fitting to a human being and that he is therefore so much more protective of his current pack out of a newly realized fear of harm coming to them, but that might be over-analyzing the situation. Certainly without being able to ask him in a manner he would understand, the true answer might just never be voiced.

BACKGROUND: For most of his life, Koromaru has been the pet of the monk that oversaw the shrine in Iwatodai, and was content to enjoy long walks, playing with children visiting the shrine, offering comfort and companionship to the sick that his owner visited and curling up next to his master at the end of the day. All this changed when a tragic accident left him without an owner and alone in the world. In what some have come to say is an inspiring display of loyalty, Koromaru continued to walk the route that he and his owner did every day and even could be seen sitting by the place where his master died, still waiting for him to appear. Despite all of this, few people ever really paid him much heed, though a few kind souls offered him food and he was disinclined to accompany them home.

Then the shadow attacked. Unable to control the persona he had developed, Koromaru fought with his teeth and claws, defending both the shrine and the place where his owner had died. The battle left him drained and badly wounded despite his victory over the shadow. Helpless at the height of the Dark Hour, Koromaru would have surely persished had it not been for Akihiko Sanada.

Akihiko had gone out by himself that evening to train and came across the scene. Taking pity on the wounded Koromaru, he carried him back to the dormitory at Iwatodai, where Mitsuru Kirijo arranged for a trip to the vet to tend to his wounds. Both she and Ikutsuki kept track of Koromaru during the medical proceedings and eventually determined that Koromaru had the potential to summon a persona, a rather unconventional situation all things considered. Upon his discharging, Ikutsuki commissioned a special collar equipped with an evoker-like device for Koromaru that would allow the stray to summon and control his persona.
